Something Out Of Nothing
SOON began with a challenge and a solution.
With limited resources and a tiny Toronto live/work space, my original goal was to devise a new creative process that was logistically possible, artistically exciting and commercially viable.
Like many artists, I had a day job. As I began searching for my new medium, I realized that my day job offered an abundant and reliable supply of discarded packing paper. With the mandate to make "something out of nothing" already prescribed, papier mâché met the criteria and revealed itself as the path forward. Experiments and learning began.
And then, very quickly, I fell in love with the process.
It's slow, it's messy, it's physically demanding and intensely tactile. The resulting pieces often deliver surprises for the hand and the eye with both the forms and the surfaces that are possible. These paper-based sculptural vessels have become a labour of love and a deeply meaningful exploration for an artist who needed a reboot and a new direction.
Two years later, from my modest studio in Peterborough, Ontario, I have sent pieces to private homes and high end hospitality spaces around the world. SOON vessels grace tables and shelves from California to New York, Stockholm to Ibiza. And SOON has barely begun.
Something Out Of Nothing indeed.
Thank you for visiting my studio.
